The Manager Commercial Natural Gas Operations will both manage and coach the team and also support development of the team’s trading tactics and strategies. Natural Gas Trading interfaces with a complex and wide range of suppliers and receivers in various countries. The market is a complex environment involving varying influencers, constrained logistical possibilities (Production & constraints, availability of Gas, Pipelines & restrictions), along with changing market conditions but which can yield exciting commercial possibilities when reacting with agility.

To maximize the profit, constant communication internally and with third parties is needed along with a highly motivated, professional team. Excellent working relations with 3rd parties are essential, as well as with all Shell partners. The ability effectively to manage multiple internal stakeholders, whilst maintaining adherence to HSSE, regulatory and compliance controls will be key in this role. Leadership team looking to provide significant increase in support to value growth with the traders and direct value delivery by Operations, through application of Operational Excellence combined with Commercial Agility. The Commercial Operations Manager – Natural Gas will need to deliver this vision through their teams as part of a continuous improvement journey. They must be highly motivated and possess strong analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills in order to recognize and solve problems quickly. Highly effective planning and organization skills are essential in order to meet the departments demanding schedules and goals. As well as an in-depth knowledge of Trading Operations competencies and responsibilities, this position requires the commercial acumen necessary to develop staff to understand, support and add value to the Trading business.

The Trading market is fast moving and complex. The Trading environment can be intense and pressurized at times. Being able to lead and work in a multi-cultural team, understanding and being able to deal with the team dynamics are essential in this role.

Other Accountabilities

  • Full remit of operational activity of Natural trading desks including scheduling such that commercial value is optimized while also minimizing cost and profit leakage.
  • Responsible to understand the end to end life cycle of a deal from pre-deal through to settlements. Accountable for safe, compliant, commercial end to end process optimization of pipeline logistics.
  • Accountable for cost management and commercial value added to deals.
  • Accountable to further embed a Continuous Improvement culture within the Commercial Operations area working with stakeholders and peer Team-Leads to identify opportunity areas for problem solving and further efficiencies.
  • Actively engage the Regional trade desk leads to ensure Operations teams are aligned and resourced to meet current & future business needs with appropriate skill sets and diverse talent.
  • Primary contact point for operational issues and strategic commercial opportunities.
  • Engage with traders to anticipate organizational and process changes to ensure organizational readiness for new margin opportunities.
  • Accountable for creating an integrated commercial culture focused on compliance, HSSE, operational excellence, optimizing business opportunities, maximizing commercial value and minimizing profit leakage supported by robust, safe and compliant operations.
  • Accountable for ensuring that the operations delivers a Talent and integrated Skillpool Plan to ensure succession, capability planning, business continuity and strong performance.
  • Identify and develop synergies with global Commercial Operations teams.
  • Accountable for optimizing, re-modelling and harmonizing operations processes and tools as they relate to Gas Operations.
  • Accountable for scheduling and execution of NA Gas movements.
  • Ensure all Trading processes related to hydrocarbon management are followed. Manage all interface errors and ensure that appropriate learning/process improvement occurs.
  • Accountable for Business Continuity Focal Point within Gas Operations, maintaining BCP plans and that business Impact Assessments for Gas operations are up to date with manual workaround procedures in place.
  • Establish an on the ground relationship with the pipelines and counterparties.
  • Develop and track KPI metrics/reporting
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives and special projects as needed.
  • Leadership to approx 6-11 staff of commercial operators
  • Delivery of a professional operations service that supports Commercial in achieving its P&L targets.
  • Operation's role is to delivery of a professional operation service that maximizes profitability through optimizing the value chain to achieve or exceed Commercial targets and comply with Regulatory requirements.
  • Work hand in hand with other gas operations team leads to ensure end to end accountability from pre deal thru to settlements.
  • Responsible for ensuring commercial strategy is executed.

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum two (2) or more years exposure to trading and more specifically operations within a trading organization.
  • Proven understanding of NA Natural Gas Markets.
  • Experience in NA Gas Trading and customer activities.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in managing complex multi-stakeholder needs.
  • Strong leadership, coaching and people development skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot existing process issues & proactively drive continuous improvement.
  • Established experience in handling the commercial aspects of contracts and logistics.
  • Ability to analyze and simplify complex problems and make decisions sometimes with incomplete data.
  • Experience in leading and working cross-function, cross-business, internationally and with multicultural teams.
  • Ability to lead and direct a number of direct reports.
  • Previous exposure to a fast pace, high energy and demanding trading environment will be an asset.
  • Knowledge of exposure management in trading as well as understanding P&L drivers.
  • Knowledge of Trading Risk Management.
