Job Description

The Natural Gas Scheduler is part of the Commercial North America Gas Operations Team responsible for the day-to-day operational management of SEAm gas activities in the South and Mexico. The scheduler will provide scheduling and operations support to various business desks across North America.

The primary purpose is to carryout daily natural gas scheduling and operational duties for SEAm which includes but is not limited to the following accountabilities:

  • Coordinate the daily product movement for SEAm and agency customers including equity gas production, purchases, sales, transportation, storage on both interstate and intrastate pipelines via electronic bulletin boards while ensuring contract obligations and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Report physical pipeline positions to SEAm trading groups.
  • Schedule accurate nominations meeting all deadlines throughout the day.
  • Optimization of transport and delivery requirements to monetize value for the trade desk through accurate timely nominations (1-shot noms), segmentation and meter bounces.
  • Monitor and report pipeline operational information providing short term opportunities to trading due to pipeline constraints and operations.
  • Manage and balance pipeline and customer accounts.
  • Strict compliance with FERC Shipper Must Hold Title, Dodd Frank Bookout requirements and understanding of the buy/sell capacity release rules.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of all contractual, license and regulatory requirements.
  • Know and Understand the various balancing mechanisms in use across North America regarding imbalance tolerances and the financial cash out risks for shippers and traders.
  • Understand how a pipeline calculates and uses cash out indices.
  • Knowledge in a pipeline’s tariff general terms and conditions.
  • Input operational information daily into SEAm internal gas management system (Endur) for accurate P&L and a clean hand off at month end.
  • Highly proficient in the knowledge and use of SEAm internal gas management system to troubleshoot issues from deal entry to invoicing.
  • Foster and maintain strong working relationships with teammates.
  • Develop and maintain trusted partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Train and Provide back up support to other schedulers within own team and across NA teams.
  • Perform monthly close activities on top 10 pipelines to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Work with limited supervision to troubleshoot, resolve problems.
  • Focal Point for elevated issue resolution in absence of supervisor.

The gas business in North America is a dynamic, fast paced and business critical trading environment. The gas day runs from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. with 5 scheduling deadlines throughout the day. Trading is done for the next day, with a 3-day package on Friday for the weekend. This can change at different times throughout the year due to holidays. The typical work-day is from 8 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with the expectation that any intraday changes required will be completed by the deadlines outlined below.

For scheduling, the timely cycle for next day is the most crucial. The remaining 4 deadlines during the day are for both same day and next day transactions. Specifically, the Intraday-ID1(same day) is at 10:00 a.m., Timely (next day) 1:00 p.m., Intraday-ID2(same day) 2:30 p.m., EVE (next day) 6:00 p.m. with the final Intraday-ID3 (same day) deadline at 7:00 p.m. The times represented are in Central Prevailing Time. This requires the candidate to be able to multi-task and work on 2 different gas days at the same time.

This position(s) is for Natural Gas Scheduling in the South Region. With the complexity of the business, there may be a high volume of trades, dealing with multiple traders, volumes, transportation, multiple locations, financial risk and exposure, commodity complexity, and regulatory requirements of transactions. The successful candidate will need to maintain a sustained proactive approach to all accountabilities of the role to ensure Gas Operations are operated in an effective and efficient way, with emphasis on Operational Excellence.

As part of the Gas Operations strategy and effort to further embed a continuous improvement mindset, the successful applicant should demonstrate aptitude to learn additional natural gas scheduling systems, processes, and new applications. The incumbent must be able to proactively collaborate with a wide and diverse set of stakeholders in a constructive manner for the delivery of all business goals.

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a business discipline preferred or equivalent years of industry related experience.
  • Minimum three (3) or more years of natural gas scheduling experience.
  • Proven track record of performance and delivery.

Commercial Acumen:

  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements for Natural Gas Scheduling preferred.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Knowledge of LEAN practices and continuous improvement would be preferred; ability to suggest and implement process changes and new procedures.
  • Champions continuous improvements (CI) by proactively supporting the forward plan for maintaining and improving systems, tools, data and processes as well as sharing best practices.

Scheduling Gas Storage & Transportation:

  • Knowledge and prior experience on several natural gas pipelines in key NE, MW and South markets preferred.
  • Advanced Knowledge of Shell’s Equity supply, gathering lines, processing plants and downstream optionality is preferred.
  • Aptitude to learn additional natural gas scheduling systems and other applications quickly.

STN Systems:

  • Knowledge of internal system; Endur / G-motion to capture gas flows daily, experience preferred.
  • Advanced Excel User with knowledge of formulas, look-ups, linking, pivot tables and macros.
  • Knowledge in data systems analysis; able to identify system error, identify reason - SQL skills are preferred.
  • Experienced user of IT systems and knowledgeable on IT landscapes.
