The Fuels Trader is accountable for the performance of one or more commodity portfolios against well established objectives such as managing price risk, covering physical supply requirements and/or generating a profit. The Trader will execute physically and financially settled transactions to accomplish these objectives, is capable of communicating the key market factors impacting the portfolio and can coordinate execution within the context of broader strategies. This person will work closely with other members of the Fuels Team, regional power desks, plant operations, portfolio planning, risk management, key suppliers, regulatory affairs, market analytics, credit and legal.


  • Coordinates, tracks and reports on the status and performance of their commodity portfolios.
  • Within established delegations of authority, efficiently executes physically and financially settled transactions to meet the objectives of their commodity portfolios.
  • Remains abreast of market developments, utilizing market intelligence, research and analyses to develop a market view which supports transactional activity. Readily shares views and analysis internally.
  • Interacts effectively with power traders, analysts and schedulers to coordinate timing, commercial terms and scheduling of transactions.
  • Interacts effectively with internal departments to insure compliance of transactions with risk and credit policies, to accurately record trades in the deal capture system and to insure accurate accounting.
  • Interacts effectively with other members of Power Team to coordinate execution of transactions within the context of broader regional and portfolio management strategies.
  • Reviews commodity, transportation and storage contracts in order to fully understand obligations and opportunities. Capable of advising Legal on standard language used in commercial contracts.
  • Maintain relationships with key suppliers, service providers and trade groups. Gathers, shares and documents market intelligence for use by the organization and incorporates into their market view.



  • Undergraduate degree in economics, finance, engineering, business administration or equivalent experience
  • Strong analytical orientation
  • Minimum eight years relevant experience
  • Prior trading experience in one or more energy commodity, e.g. coal, oil, natural gas, electricity, emissions
  • Working knowledge of fuel transportation & logistics
  • Extensive knowledge of market trends, key players in the market and regulatory issues
  • Ability to perform in a changing environment under stressful conditions
  • Knowledge of risk management tools and energy derivatives
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including written and verbal
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Products


  • Post-graduate degree in Business or Economics
